My Life is in My Books – #MFRWauthor

Happy Friday! It’s Week #3 of the 2018 MFRWauthor blog challenge and the topic this week is discussing how much of myself is in my writing.

I’ve got to admit – there are names and characteristics of family and friends, some pets, and even places in my contemporary romance novels that relate to me. They say you should write what you know, so that’s my excuse.

When I’m trying to come up with a name for a “background” character and a friend’s name pops up in my head, it’s easy to include it. They’re used for the characters that enhance the scene for whatever the main characters are doing. For example, in my book, The Santa Bargain, Maria (a main character) goes to the winter festival and buys popcorn from Sue and roasted chestnuts from Bob. That was a nod to a former dentist boss of mine and his wife. I kept in touch with them because they were like family, so it was fun to include them. In my upcoming book, Stealing the Billionaire’s Heart (part of The Billionaire’s Club multi-author boxed set to be released in April, 2018), the hero’s grandmother is an Italian woman named Claudia. She’s named for my good friend’s mother who is Italian and from just north of Venice, Italy, where part of the book is set.

Boo

In my book, Baby, That’s the Spirit!, the heroine, Amethyst, is clairvoyant and can speak with the dead. The story takes place during Halloween, which means Amethyst just couldn’t have any other type of pet than a black cat. Okay, maybe she could have had a green frog, but something like a white poodle would be out of the question. Seriously. So my own handsome black cat, Boo, was an obvious choice and has now become immortalized as Amethyst’s black cat (also named Boo).

Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, CO

I lived in Colorado for almost twenty years, so it makes sense to use the beautiful Rocky Mountains in my settings. I’ve driven ’em, hiked ’em, and skied ’em so I’m familiar enough with places and topography to make my settings realistic. Colorado features in The Santa Bargain and Stealing the Billionaire’s Heart (and, in a partially written book, Meant for You, that I’m hoping to release later in 2018). For the same reason, Georgia (where I live now) is the setting for Baby, Count on Me and Baby, That’s the Spirit!.

Under the Influence…of Books – #MFRWauthor

Reading. My first Love, My muse - author Robin Michaela

Welcome to Week #5 of the 2018 #MFRWauthor BLog Challenge. Today, the topic prompt is to to tell you about a book that has influenced my life.

*scratches head*

I can’t think of one, single book, in particular, that has changed my life but, lucky for you, I can think of the types of books that have heavily influenced me. Romance books.

I know – shocking, right? But, I AM a contemporary romance author, so you had to have known what I was going to say!

I love romances – almost any type of them, too. I read contemporary, paranormal, sci fi, time-travel, historical, Westerns, regency, Highlander, and billionaires. I’m not a fan of the darker romances, though, like a Mafia or biker romance because I like my reading the way I like my life – light and happy. The real world is full of violence, sadness and hate in so many forms, that I suppose I read romance because I know I’ll get that happy ending that can often be so elusive. The romances I write may have some angst in them, but you can sense the underlying love and caring the couple feels towards each other (I hope!).

We all crave love and acceptance and I think readers find that in a romance novel, which is why “bodice rippers” remain perennially popular.

Checking off my Bucket List – #MFRWauthor

Hey there! Welcome to Week 7 of the  2018 #MFRWauthor blog challenge. I missed last week’s post (deadlines – the curse of authors, lol), but that was the first time I haven’t blogged in this challenge in more than a year. Holy smokes! Anyhow, this week’s topic prompt is to tell you about the top five things on my bucket list.

Pretty dang sure I covered this in a post last year. *shuffles through papers*

Yup, here it is. And it wasn’t written that long ago (December, 2017), but I did knock one thing off that bucket list in early January, 2018: I ran my first marathon. My goal was to finish in an upright position (check) and on the correct side of an ambulance – meaning outside of one (check). I’ve already posted this picture, too, but since I’m recycling my list, I figure I’ll recycle the photo for your viewing pleasure, lol.

My son-in-law completed his first marathon with me. This is us, exhausted, but happy after running 26.2 miles over more than six hours. I wouldn’t call it fun, but it was neat to run through all five of the Disney World theme parks. Now we have the medal and the Mickey ears to prove we did it!

As far as my bucket list goes, nothing has changed. These are the remaining four from last year, plus I added another item:

  • Become a New York Times or USA Today Bestselling Author
  • Become a full-time writer so I can give up the blood and guts of the dental world
  • Climb the steps of Macchu Pichu
  • Visit Australia and the Far East
  • Added: Visit Iceland to see the Northern Lights

Notice the theme? Travel and writing. I have other goals, but these are the ones that stick uppermost in my mind.

How about you? What’s on your bucket list?
