Dog-Eared Romance Books – #MFRWauthor

It’s Week #25 in the quest to pick my brain and impart everything that makes Robin Michaela tick (otherwise know as the #MFRWauthor 2017 blog challenge). This week, the topic is – da dum – my favorite books to read.

Robin Michaela - Southern Roads: Baby, Count On MeThis topic choice was easy: I’m a romance author, so you can bet I read romance books. By the ton. In a wide variety of subgenres.

I hear you asking yourself “why”? Shouldn’t I read something completely different from a romance novel on my off time? Nope, I love ’em, so I read this type of book more than anything else. New stories get my mind working, allowing me to think of new situations for my characters or new genres to consider when writing. For example, right now I’m writing contemporary romance, but I enjoy science fiction and paranormal romances, too, so you may see a future book featuring hot and sexy aliens, shifters or vampires (or all three. Hmm…).

That being said, I do like other books, as well. In fact, I’m a sucker for anything written by James Rollins. When you read one of his novels, it starts off with a bang from the very first page and is a roller coaster ride until the end. I count his work among the myriad of “must-save” books that are overflowing my shelves.

Another of my favorite authors is Diana Gabaldon, author of the “Outlander” novels. Come on, who doesn’t like to think about what sexy Jamie Fraser isn’t wearing under his kilt? (Note to self: I might be reading too many spicy romance novels, after all…). I also save and reread her books when the mood strikes. She writes in an easy-going, slightly snarky, conversational style that hooks you from the start. And, I might have mentioned that there’s Jamie Fraser…in a kilt …

Let’s see…books that strengthen your writing skills? I do read those and they’re well-thumbed, especially since I’m a new romance author.

Self help books? Snooze – um, I mean, no, I don’t generally read them.

Biographies? Meh. I’ll pass, in most cases.

Political ramblings? Gah…now where did I put that gun…?

In the short analysis, it looks like I live in a fantasy world, away from the strife of the real one. Sounds like the perfect place for a romance author, don’tcha think?

What type of books do you read? Drop a comment below and let me know. Thanks for stopping by!

I enjoy reading romance. For my 2017 reading challenge I told myself I would read books outside of the romance genre. I’m trying to stick to that, but I’m still sneaking in a few romance as well.
