This week’s blog challenge is to write about my hobby. Hmm, well, it’s gonna be a short list. Why? Because I’m an author, which means I sit at my computer during my spare time, creating stories and bringing my characters to life. Once the words start flowing, I barely take time to eat, much less indulge in hobbies and interests.
That being said, I do have a couple of past times I enjoy. The first is reading. I can’t imagine not having a book somewhere nearby! I adore reading and getting lost in the various worlds and settings created by talented authors. Reading is an escape from boredom, a way to live vicariously through the characters, and a gateway to knowledge. In my opinion, the most wonderful device ever invented is the Kindle. I can now carry 500 romance books around in my purse, ensuring I will never run out of reading material.
My other hobby is running. Uh huh, pounding the pavement does it for me. If I am stuck in the “sagging middle” of a manuscript, I often can clear my mind and figure out how to move the plot forward after a run. Running is a great stress reliever, too. I can’t tell you how many times a frustrating day has turned around after I get in a good four miles. Plus, knowing how many calories I burned allows me to fudge a little when I am craving fudge, lol.
My daughter, son-in-law, and I started running races together more than three years ago. I love the connection these events have given us. We live in different states, so we look forward to seeing each other at various races, plus comparing notes and encouraging each other helps push us through the long runs we need to build endurance for some of our races (um, I have a ten mile training run to get done this weekend!).
In fact, at the end of this month, we’ll be running the Ultra Amber Challenge at the Gasparilla Distance Classic in Tampa, FL. This will be our second time competing in this back-to-back 15k (9.3 miles) and 5k (3.1 miles) on a Saturday, followed by a half marathon on Sunday – a total distance of 25.5 miles of running over those two days. This picture is from last year’s race.
How about you? What are some of your hobbies? Let me know in the comments below!
